Aircraft Power Systems

Hi, this post will be more educational, I can't sleep, so I decided to write something about Aircraft Power Systems or APSs. I also got an idea that this will be a miniseries where I'll explain each system. This way it will also help me memorise it better, so let's get into the first episode, which is the basics:

What are Aircraft Power Systems and why do we need them?

Aircraft are made up of many systems that allow them to operate safely and efficiently, some of the most important ones are Aircraft Power Systems. But what are they and why exactly are they needed?

__

Types of Aircraft Power Systems

We have four types:

  1. Hydraulic system
    • uses pressurized liquid to transmit energy
  2. Pneumatic system
    • uses compressed air to transmit energy
  3. Electrical system
    • transmits electrical energy and can use electric motors to produce mechanical movement
  4. Combined system
    • combines different types of systems and converts energy from one form to another when needed

__

What are aircraft power systems?

Aircraft power systems are systems designed to provide, transmit and convert energy in order to operate different parts of the aircraft.

Simply, they take energy from source such as pumps, compressors, generators or accumulators (batteries), the sources vary in different systems, transfer it to the place where it is needed and use it to create mechanical movement.

For example, when the landing gear needs to be extended, the power system provides the energy to move the landing gear into landing position. The system here would be hydraulic, but about this later.

So, the process goes like this:

From the energy source (pumps, compressors, generators or accumulators (batteries)) the energy is then transmitted via hydraulic fluid, compressed air or electricity, again, it depends on the system, to a working component, which can be hydraulic cylinder or electric motor, that converts the energy into mechanical movement.

Why aircraft need power systems?

Many components on aircraft require a lot more force than a pilot could provide manually. Power systems make it possible to control these components by supplying and distributing the necessary energy needed.

For example, a power system can provide the mechanical energy needed to extend the landing gear, its retraction, operate the flaps, doors, hatches or wheel brakes.

This becomes especially important when the aircraft become larger and more complex. Instead of the pilot directly moving a mechanism, the pilot gives a command and the appropriate system provides the energy required to perform the action.

Therefore, Aircraft Power Systems allow energy to be generated, distributed, controlled and converted into relevant mechanical work throughout the aircraft.

In short

Aircraft systems are like the muscles of the aircraft. They provide energy, which allows mechanisms in the aircraft to move and operate correctly. Without them, components that require incredible force would be much more difficult or practically impossible in many aircraft. By transmitting the energy around the aircraft, power systems make complex mechanisms to be operated safely and reliably possible.

I hope you enjoyed the first part, next up is hydraulic system. I hope you have a great day, rest of your day or night. Take care and see you sometime else.
